What Is Social Media?

What Is Social Media

Social Media is a series of applications and websites designed and developed to allow people to interact with others by sharing content efficiently, quickly and in real-time. Most people today use social media channels as apps on their smartphone or tablet, but the reality is, all this social media trend started with computers. As per statistics, 50% of internet users never engage social media.

The ability to share opinions, photos, events, etc. in real-time has changed the way we do daily life and it is also changing the way we do business. Sellers who utilize social media for the marketing of their products have seen great results. But the strategy to be successful with social media is to play with it carefully.

One of the biggest mistakes sellers make is to create an account with every social media channel they find relevant and then leave them with no activity. Having an account with every social media channel does not make you “into” social media.

In fact, social media users never follow a seller who creates accounts and does not engage and therefore becomes labeled as a non-serious seller. It is better to not have a social media icon on your website if you are not properly engaging it.

The other big mistake sellers make is they keep talking about what is important to them on social media rather than talking about what is important to the targeted audience.

As a seller, you may think it is best strategy to shout that you have a sale going on – and in some cases, this would be true. But if you are using social media only for getting instant sales then it will do nothing for you.

Your goal should be to provide content engaging and attractive to your customer that urges them to share your post to others. If you want to be successful on social media, engage your customer, ask them their opinions, involve them in a dialogue and share products with details on social pages. It will create a discussion topic which leads to engaged followers.

Another thing to consider is that the most commonly shared content on social media involves an image. So always include an image with your post. It dramatically increasing your chances someone will share it with their social circle. While building up a large network of followers is great, ultimately what you are after is for the followers you do have – however many that is – to share what you are posting with their network.

Think of it this way, a post or tweet that you put out there might get read, but when it has been shared or forwarded or favorited by someone who got it, it now has that person’s endorsement. And we all listen to our friends a LOT more than we listen to a retail store.
